“If you put your mind to it, then you can achieve it.” Throughout my life I have heard this motivational quote time and time again by family and peers. However, now that I am in college, I find myself constantly questioning its value generally as well as personally. Carol S. Dweck writes a relating article focusing on the capabilities of two different mind-sets specifically pertaining to students and their learning processes. The fixed mind-set where there is no room to be more than you already are because we cant grow any further intellectually; in contrast a growth mind-set where the mind is perceived as a powerful muscle able to achieve anything by working hard rather than smart. My own life experiences have placed me in both categories during times of misery as well as virtuous feat.
When it comes to college I have had many moments of despair where I have told myself I am way too overwhelmed and cant take the heat any further. Not only does this limit my abilities to succeed but also restricts my need for creativity overall. I have come to terms with the fact that if I continue to tell myself I cant do something and reside in that negative logic, it will ultimately be my downfall resulting in unnecessary failure. In order to overcome these moods of defeat I take the first step moving forward to relish in the reason I am in this situation in the first place. I have to remind myself that in the long run it is all for a greater purpose to achieve the goals I already set myself up to conquer. From this new state of mind, I set up specific tasks in order to achieve and accomplish these goals. This belief facilitates me towards achieving my goals and restoring my faith knowing I can absolutely do it! So can a fixed mind-set limit us from being open-minded? Undeniably, yes this state of mind can limit the capabilities of our minds. The human brain is an extremely powerful force, one that should never be doubted but rather utilized. By obtaining a growth mind-set we can ultimately be what we want to be and do anything we want as long as we set or minds to it. My family and peers were right about that.
I find that this was the strongest piece of writing you had. Mindset is truly important-- especially for people who desire to strive for success. I like the formatting that you did in this blog, and if you decide to go to weebly, let me know if you have any questions so I can help you. Keep it up, it was very insightful!
